Group Mourns loss of DBCG Supporter Ronnie Ferrans

22nd December, 2006: Well-known North-East Fife figure Ronnie Ferrans (right) has died after a tragic accident in his home town of Cupar. Mr Ferrans, 47, passed away in Dundee 's Ninewells Hospital on Thursday after being rushed to the hospital by ambulance in the early hours of the morning.

The Cuparian was a respected figure in the Scouting movement, having been warden at the National Scout Activity in Fordell Firs, near Dunfermline. As a scout leader he held prominent positions of authority in Cupar and other parts of Fife, taking youngsters to trips abroad in Iceland, Norway , Gibraltar and Texas.

Mr Ferrans was also a team leader at Rossie School , a secure unit near Montrose, for the accommodation, care and education of children sent through the court system.

The former Cupar Operatic Society lead also had a spell working in St Andrew's Rusacks Hotel, where he was a popular figure behind the bar.

In 2005, he became a founding member of the Douglas Bader Community Garden group, helping to raise hundreds of pounds to boost the Cupar-based project.

Douglas Bader Community Garden Project manager Andrew Gold said: "This has come as a terrible shock to all of us. Ronnie was a very personable guy who always had a joke to tell and was in his element in a crowd of people. He was a fantastic supporter of our garden project, and his enthusiasm for the creation of a redeveloped Bader Garden was second to none."

Mr Ferrans is survived by his father John, who lives in Cupar, and his brother John, from Newburgh.
