Come and See A Play in a Pub!

REGULAR patrons of pubs and restaurants in Cupar may be facing changes when the national smoking ban comes into force on March 26 th, but one local publican believes she has come up with a unique way of keeping her customers entertained.

Elizabeth McInroy, publican of the Cupar Arms Hotel, Burnside, has organised a performance of “Love Letters”, A.R. Gurney’s romantic comedy, to take place within the pub on Wednesday, March 29 th, at 8pm.

Performed by Brenda Hunter and Alan Tricker, known for their work with the St Andrews Play Club at the Byre Theatre, the play is composed of letters exchanged between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences over many years.

It tells the story of their life-long friendship captured in correspondence, peppered with the conspiratorial notes of childhood, racy exchanges of youth, notes on bungled attempts at love and sex, and culminating in touching moments of nostalgia and romance.

Elizabeth, who has organised for all proceeds from the evening to go towards boosting the aims of the Douglas Bader Community Garden (DBCG) Group, believes that this may be the first time a public house has offered its customers the chance to watch a dramatic performance while enjoying a drink in a relaxed social setting.

Elizabeth , now Vice-Chair of the DBCG Group, said: “This is something really different for a public house like the Cupar Arms, and it’s great that Brenda and Alan have kindly agreed to put on this one-off performance which I’m sure everyone will enjoy.

“The play is touching and funny and I’m sure it will appeal to everyone. I’m also delighted to be able further the aims of the DBCG Group at the same time as exploring a new form of pub entertainment.”

Tickets for the play are priced at ₤5, and can be purchased on the door at the night, or by dropping into the Cupar Arms Hotel.
